Histfic can definitely have mainstream appeal. Seems as though one of Juliet Mushens’ biggest successes as an agent recently was with The Miniaturist. Though I gather Juliet is interested in history. The blogpost about how that novel was pitched to her is interesting. I think the link was posted somewhere around here. Go for it

I am sure someone sent me a friend request, but not sure if I logged on here to accept it and can’t find it in my notifications. So if anyone sent one and I didn’t accept, many apologises. Please try again.

Daedalus replied to the topic Richard's Literary Byways: The Dispossessed, by Ursula K Le Guin in the forum Blogs 8 years, 1 month ago
Apologies, Richard, I saw that you’d written this blog a few days ago but was busy, and then it slipped my mind. I’m ashamed to say, as a fan of SF, that I’ve never read any Le Guin (or K Le Guin). I’d been wondering where I might start, and now I know. The Dispossessed sounds as though it is brimming with ideas, which is to my mind a hallmar…[Read more]

I removed that sidebar because a glitch in the WP software meant that it was displaying posts from private groups publically, Richard. Apparently this has been an ongoing issue since 2013 and no one has yet found a workable repair to the code. Will have a proper look at it or at an alternative when I’ve got time next week. But that’s why it’s gone…[Read more]

You know what Raine, I think your last suggestion might work better. It’s hard for me to comment because I’ve read and loved this before but I found some of the transitions in and out of distant narrator bits somewhat abrupt but that could just be because it was unfamiliar.

I quite like the idea of a more generalised private critique group for shorter pieces. Groups for each WIP work with novels, but I feel might be a bit unwieldy for shorts, as you’d have to round up new critiquers every time

Well done, that man! We LIKE outward facing books…especially when we know the author!

Brilliant, well done John. Please put a link in the Podium when it’s published? You’re on a bit of a roll, there

Personally I like it. The narrator-y bits make the transitions into a sort of PD slide. If you’re going to introduce a range of geographically dispersed characters in a short piece of text, this seems like a good way to do it. And I like the voice
