Philippa East started the topic Example Cover Letter in the forum The Writers' Lifeboat 7 years, 10 months ago
As requested, here is a copy of the cover letter I used on submission. (Daeds has asked me to post it in this bit of the forum). It wasnโt actually the version I sent my now-agent Sarah Manning back in 2016, because I didnโt even know to write a proper cover letter the first time I went to FoW, but this is the one I was using when I formally sub…[Read more]

This is fantastic news! Absolutely brilliant. Well done. And so exciting that you already have an editor at PRH lined up. I think it is great to get an agent too, to negotiate all those tricky contracts! Regarding the other rLondon agent, I think that you can simply inform her that you’ve signed with someone else and you wish to withdraw your…[Read more]

So, so pleased for you – to get placed once in a comp is awesome, but to be placed twice in the same one? Out of this world!
I am so chuffed with all this good news today in the Den!!

This is absolutely wonderful Kaz, and I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more. To find someone like that who ‘gets’ your writing and you click with, and the double endorsement of the PRH editor as well! Absolutely delighted with this, and can’t wait to read the book

Quick pop around to say C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to @kazg and @janette for their wonderful news this morning. I’ve been reading everything but if I took the time to respond to it all, I would still be awake at 2 am with a rise and shine time of 5 30. I will catch up on All . The . Things over the week, but it’s my first week back at work…[Read more]

I’m going to go with the advice given and submit it to another comp, this time with its original title ‘The Grandmothers’. If it sounds familiar, it is because it was an old comp entry over on Cloud but which I polished up a little, this one set in a Celtic village (yes, rather like my other wip *blushes*). As I don’t want to compromise by…[Read more]

… And now I’ve found this thread!
Firstly, many congratulations, Elle, Daeds, Hil, Kaz and Jules. I’ll look out for those links.
I think I’ve already said too many times already, but I have also come first AND second in the same local comp, Pennine Ink, with my two entries. Not stumbling upon this first, I opened a fresh link and posted the link…[Read more] -

Fantastic, Janette. Delighted for you. What a lot of power you’ve packed into a few words. Cracking bit of writing and a well deserved winner.
Any plans for the second-place piece?

*blushes* Sorry, I’ve only just found this link. Yes, Mandy was indeed bloody brilliant and it felt oh-so-special to be sat listening to her. It was the proverbial cherry atop the York cake that had already proved to be one-to-be-remembered.

As I mentioned all over the rest of DoW except, probably, the right place, I received an email this morning to confirm I have not only won Pennine Ink flash fiction comp 2018, but my other story was placed second. Can you believe it?
Anyway, as asked I have posted the link that contains the winning story below. I can’t believe it is the one that…[Read more]

Am I putting this in the right place???
Anyhow, presuming I am, here is another with some exciting news to share. This year I decided to try my hand at external comps, but put them behind me as the lack of news seemed to confirm I was a novice at it.
… until this morning, when I received an email from Pennine Ink Writers’ Workshop, confirming I…[Read more] -

Thanks Tony, good points, noted.
Thanks, Elle. I guess my spell checker doesn’t speak French! Good points. I think I have a tendency to over-explain or I would have ended it at “He was my first”. Need to trust the reader more. The telly paragraph is a bit of a cop out – I’ll need to rewrite it.I can’t remember what the original prompt was, but I…[Read more]

Thanks Philippa for your feedback. I’m really happy that you found it credible especially bearing in mind your background.
I have corrected all of those typos and mistakes so thank you for that too.
