Oh I love what KIt de Waal is doing – she is being so incredibly supportive and generous setting up scholarships and all that. One admirable lady. *swoons* I’d not really kept track of Kerry Hudson, but I’ll check her out.
That’s true re lots of them having MAs, I guess it hadn’t really registered. I’d never think anyone has become an agent…[Read more]

Oh Gosh, you’re 100% right. I remember now. Also, no biting, gouging or spoon scooping action. That last one almost got through if I recall, but was thrown out on a recount after somebody was shown to have voted for it 17 times. Can’t remember who that was now.

It’s an incredibly kind service to offer, P. *blows kisses*
I might ask for some help with the newest wip once I’ve got the next batch of edits done…

I find Twitter really useful. Keeping track of publishing news was the reason I finally succumbed and joined it! I guess the closest we can do to a centralised MSWL is just to search the hashtag. Other than that, it’s the slow business of googling each agent for recent interviews as well as their agency page.
I’m like Ath – I don’t really notice…[Read more]

Totally forgot to say – LOVE LOVE LOVE the image of the fly and the spider’s web. Him seeing himself as that fly is so sinister and foreshadowy and makes you really want to side with him in whatever dark shenanigans he is up to! 🙂

Just come to this after reading the first chapter (sorry, I mean’t to read a few days ago and got sidetracked). So this is the guy we meet in the woods? Ace! And I’m assuming we’ve seen a fair bit of him between then and now, so would have already encountered his OCD and the hints of military/prison/crime dribbled into the thoughts. I love the…[Read more]

In a word, yes, would totally read on!! 🙂
Elle has suggested leading with Laura’s PoV, and I do think it might work well that way, partly because we get to know her much better in that short piece of text than we get to know unnamed him. Also because her section is full of suggestions and hooks that I think set up the reader better in terms of…[Read more]

I wonder if the monthly comp needs its own forum, separate from the comps, opportunities etc one. Might make it easier to find, especially as months get added… ?

Histfic can definitely have mainstream appeal. Seems as though one of Juliet Mushens’ biggest successes as an agent recently was with The Miniaturist. Though I gather Juliet is interested in history. The blogpost about how that novel was pitched to her is interesting. I think the link was posted somewhere around here. Go for it

Apologies, Richard, I saw that you’d written this blog a few days ago but was busy, and then it slipped my mind. I’m ashamed to say, as a fan of SF, that I’ve never read any Le Guin (or K Le Guin). I’d been wondering where I might start, and now I know. The Dispossessed sounds as though it is brimming with ideas, which is to my mind a hallmar…[Read more]

I removed that sidebar because a glitch in the WP software meant that it was displaying posts from private groups publically, Richard. Apparently this has been an ongoing issue since 2013 and no one has yet found a workable repair to the code. Will have a proper look at it or at an alternative when I’ve got time next week. But that’s why it’s gone…[Read more]

@jd73 Bluemoose are supposed to be really good aren’t they? One of the big hitter indies. So good luck with them!
@bellam if you are southeast, keep an eye out cos there are loads more of these kinds of things in and around London. Are you on Twitter? They are forever coming up on my TL, and always down south somewhere (sigh). -

@giselle, I was wondering about the set up too. Will it be like job interviews? Erk.
And yeah, it’s great that they are doing this. BUt also really sad that it’s so exceptional, and demonstrates just how London-centric the industry is – that two hours north constitutes venturing into exotic territory!!

@jd73 that’s good news! I guess just make sure the first 3 chapters are different to the old version!
@juliec The agency are a big-ish well established one, with some big name authors and all that jazz. And yeah, any agency actively looking at diversity and accessibility is a good agency, to my mind. 🙂

@janette, yeah chuck one in. There’s probably a fairly small chance of actually being selected to pitch, so no harm in trying out.
