I really enjoy this Sophie. I thought it really came alive when we were inside the room and inside his head. Really compelling internal monologue, lots of info and hints at info contained within the that but none of it telegraphed. Just enough to intrigue and pull you in. You do this sort of βdark underbellyβ of society so well.
I think the oth…[Read more]

On the matter of the supposed redirect to the secure address. I opened the old address this morning as I hadn’t changed my favourites. Everything appeared as normal (except the address said not secure) until I tried to log in. It simply ignored my log in with no messages and no redirect. Fortunately I saw Daed’s reply to Hilary from last night and…[Read more]

Thanks all π
@vandemal, yes it IS Ava, though she’s changed a bit since you last saw her and is now gallivanting through Burlington Arcade in 1858…but she’s the same Ava at heart. And thank you! π
That’s what I thought, @skylark, so it’s good to hear your experience. There is benefit at the business end, of course, but it’s also having…[Read more]

Bonjour
When we lived in La Rochelle, my governess tried to make me say ‘Bonjour,’ to people we met in the street. It was polite she said, I would never be a gentleman if I did not learn to be polite. But I was shy, and after our morning walk she would scold me, and shake me impatiently. Papa was away at the war and Maman was β distant. I knew s…[Read more]

Thanks Philippa – that does all make sense! Sounds like I need to now combine the stakes of the challenge with the overall feel…
The inciting incident isn’t actually that she can/can’t make an orb; it’s the fact that a little later, she decides to practise in secret, drains her Power and needs to refill… and at THAT point, discovers something…[Read more]

Had a great night at NIBS this week, our little creative writing group in Nanpantan. As I am Chief Prompt Finder, it got me thinking about what I prefer to use and why – and what kind of prompts work best in group settings.
So I’ve mused a bit on the Scribbles; you can see what prompts we used this week, and I’ve also posted a piece I wrote using…[Read more]

So great to read this! CONGRATULATIONS! You definitely still need an agent regardless of interest from publishers – they do all the tricky stuff like negotiating contracts and mine has been so brilliant anytime I’ve asked her about the bits of publishing I’m not so sure about. Plus she’s helped me stand my ground a couple of times on things I…[Read more]

Mulling monthly comp ideas and realising that I’m better at dismal endings than I am hopeful beginnings…
-
Every ending is a new beginning! *grins like she’s in an inspirational photo*
-
I have an idea but I think even as a new beginning it might be a bit depressing!
-
-
Now I know that’s not true, Raine!
-
You can have a new beginning that will inevitably lead to a dismal ending. Just take out the ending.
i.e. “She fell in love with him the moment she saw him singing along during Mamma Mia 2.”-
I too seem unable to think of anything except gloomy endings
-
Mad, that’s exquisite!
-
@janeshuff, suggestion for next month’s challenge perhaps! π
-
I’ve taken a morning off to write something – the first one unsettled me so much, I was determined to make it uplifting, regardless of crap-factor.

Wow, that’s brilliant. So lucky. I’ve only seen dolphins twice, both times because I happened to be looking in the right place when they breached. Did you get a good view?
Oh wow! I’m not jealous. Not at all. No, I refuse to be …. bloody hell, I’m jealous.
It was a truly magical thing. They did all that leaping out of the water together stuff that theyβre supposed to do.
Oh, fabulous. The only time I’ve seen dolphins was at Kaikoura in NZ, and the leaping and playing is amazing to see.
That sounds magical. I’ve not seen them other than from a tourist boat in Tenerife, which really isn’t the same thing.
YAY for dolphins @janeshuff!! They are just the most amazing creatures. (Apart from bats, obv). Have never got over the buzz of seeing them however often I’ve done so.
