Oh goodness, yes – we are our own worst critics!!
On the cloud, we often talked about ‘failure’ and ‘success’ and how differently people perceived the definitions of them. So I completely understand that you view not being placed as failure – it was one of a whole range of responses we used to get.
Me – I enter very few comps because I hated…[Read more]

Definitely not failure if you’ve tried some comps – you had to write the bloomin’ entry first! And from experience, competitions can be a matter of luck as well as great writing – does the judge like your particular genre? Your style? I know from peer-judging comps on the cloud, my own preference for reading material comes through in the kind of…[Read more]

A New Dawn
A blood red sun rose through the smoke from a thousand cooking fires, smoke that hung like mist over distant Alexandra township. A typical African morning on the highveld, but this was not a typical day. Daniel and his mother stepped from the bus onto the dusty road and followed the other passengers. Daniel wished his father could be…[Read more]

@raine – found it. The kitchen saga…
Basically, we have a worktop that is not level (actually goes the ‘wrong’ way so water runs away from the sink) with the point where the join is on that worktop opened up. We have self opening drawers because they were not put in level. Or floor was re-screed for times before it was good enough to lay vinyl…[Read more]-
And apologies – just read this through and it seems my u is not working very well on the keyboard! Pshhh. Authors. You’d think they’d check their spellings, wouldn’t you? (And of course the blasted u has worked perfectly all through this post…)

😀 I have a w that doesn’t work on my laptop keyboard, and a slightly sticky shift button on my external keyboard! I blame the complete lack of dusting.

I blame the fellas eating at the keyboard – the crumbs get stuck underneath, especially on the lap top 😉

Remember “Memories” in the critique section? Now it’s “Felicity’s First” at Across The Margin: http://acrossthemargin.com/felicitys-first/

This is a very interesting thread. Of no direct interest to me, I’m not looking for an agent, but it’s heartwarming to see Den dwellers giving their knowledge so freely. Very generous. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Yes, I’d read more. The first section is intriguing and I’d want to find out how this fits into the overall story. Good writing, confident. Might be a bit overwritten in places – could be simplified on edit, perhaps.
Second section brings us back to reality nicely, well written. Without knowing the story it’s difficult to say if these sections…[Read more] -
