Up to my neck in astrolabe pictures and nary an idea as yet. Still, there’s a week left. Plenty of time!

I killed a hare in latest chapter, and tbh feel way more sad about this than about the dead people.

Aw fanks @jillybean! But then I couldn’t write horror if you held a gun to my head. Although actually, that might be somewhat inspiring! :-O Histfic either – I don’t think I have the memory capacity anymore *sighs*
Yeah @richardb I guess that’s it! It’s not a part of actual life-that-involves-real-people! That’s aside from the fact that it’s…[Read more]

@alanr that seems a doable timeline. I usually take about 6 months from starting to plan to end of first draft, although this one might be quicker thanks to NaNo. The six zillion edits are kind of scattered about in between other projects, beta readers etc, so I don’t really know how much actual time I spend on that. Plus it’s bloody endless anyway init?

Raine replied to the topic NaNoWriMo in the forum Coffee Shop 7 years, 6 months ago
That’s the one, John. 🙂 I exclude writing from that because, well, I’m not sure really. Because it doesn’t involve anyone’s needs but my own, and doesn’t involve money!?

RL = Real Life

Raine replied to the topic NaNoWriMo in the forum Coffee Shop 7 years, 6 months ago
Yay for plots resolving themselves @alanr! Always a good feeling. 🙂
HOw’re other NaNoers doing? I’m on 36k, struggling a bit with days being taken up with RL, but am hoping to make it early next week – before a family invasion!

Fever Dream by Samanta Scweblin is a novella too – although I don’t know the wordcount – and it got shortlisted for the Booker!! I wasn’t her debut in Spain, but I think it was her first translated book.
I think there is more scope for novellas with the smaller presses, but yeah, I think a new writer would find it nigh on impossible to get…[Read more]

That’s great, @alanr! Hope the flow keeps going. I am in the process of hauling myself over my 25k wall. Getting there, but oof.

Well done @elle. Such a sad little piece, and the bird image is perfect.

Raine replied to the topic Setting The Place in the forum Blogs 7 years, 7 months ago
Thanks Elle. These are good prompts. I’m very into settings, which I think comes from my previous life as a conservation ecologist – working in some amazing wild places. So I’ve always got to have a strong sense of the natural world that my story takes place in – weather, plants, animals, noises, tides, rock types … yeah maybe I go too far, but…[Read more]

Don’t know if any of the YA/Children’s writers would be interested in this, but GEA North have extended their submission deadline until November 19th. For those who haven’t heard of it, the short blurb reads:
GEA North works with new writers, professional writers, published authors and MA postgrads – as well as writers who simply feel ‘stuck’…[Read more]

Dammit. Just realised the core theme to the wip is not what I thought it was.
-
One day you’ll be glad of this. Better sooner than later.
-
I’ve also completely lost control of the days of the week. I think’s it’s just been both Tuesday and Friday simultaneously.
-
Sympathies, Raine. I had to spend the best part of a day retiming my plot because I got the days wrong and ended up with things happening on a Sunday when they couldn’t
-
I’m thinking of launching a campaign against the need for books to have to do days of the week at all.
-
Or to have any internal coherency whatsoever. Who cares if my MC left the house in trousers and was wearing a skirt by the time she got on the bus
-
I recall that Joseph Conrad had to make some rewrites to Under Western Eyes at a very late stage when someone realised that the entire plot took place over one extremely long day
-
@janeshuff there’s a possibility of that happening in my current wip – only more likely shorts -> trousers as the MC is a he.
-
-
-
-
@athelstone Hurrah. It’s time we writers broke free from the shackles of continuity.
-
@janeshuff this looks like another case where bbpress is hiding replies (for space and tidiness) but not providing a ‘show all replies’ button. So although I can see there were 8 replies, I can’t actually view them.
-
Neither can I!

Don’t change anything! Mr Sea is in Doha this weekend with instructions to visit the Museum of Islamic Art to take photos of their amazing collection of astrolabes. I don’t have any ideas yet, but I know an astrolabe will be involved.

I liked the prompts, Jonathan – their utter randomness and the idea. Stick with it. Nano will be a slow month, but we all might need a little breather mid month to keep ourselves sane!!

Sounds good. Plenty of things said and unsaid in there. Of course, now you’ve spent ages deciding on that, your editor will definitely want to change it again!!

That’s amazing @Daedalus!! SO exciting! Although not for him, obv. For him that’s the ultimate defeat *sobs offscreen*. And I love it when you realise something, and there’s that ‘well, yes, *obviously*’ feeling to it. Like that facet of your story was there all along, you just hadn’t spotted it. So good.
