It’s arrived already @hilary . It’ll take me a little while to get to it – I have some library books to finish first. I’m impressed by your publisher. I hadn’t heard of Lightning Books before. In addition to Sea Defences I bought some novels and memoirs from their antipodean collection.

Congratulations @hilary
I’ve ordered a copy of Sea Defences. I’m highly unlikely to be in Suffolk in January but have a great time at the launch.
Congratulations too for the flash win. Does the Bridport site post the winning stories? I couldn’t find any but the site isn’t the easiest to use.

Thank you for ordering Sea Defences, @libby

Thank you, everyone, for your support. It means a lot. @Hilary, please never give up. I’ve been told there couldn’t be a better time for pitching, what with so many events cancelled and agents working from home. And you deserve a break too.

@Hilary – I know we talked about this before but I will say it again. That age comment from this agent is rubbish, plenty of authors have their debut later in life. I’m quite sure Kit de Waal was over 50 when she published My Name is Leon.
There are still plenty of agents out there to submit to and the number of full request you’ve received shows…[Read more]

Wow, thank you, everybody, for your kind, supportive words. I only relayed my experiences to show @Hilary that she was not alone, but your responses have touched me deeply.
@Debi – thank you for your support. Of course, you know all about my MS, and you really are the best.
@Hilary – re the suggested beta read, I’m happy to put my name forward…[Read more]

Jeez that’s shocking behaviour. Both from your agent @Hilary and @janette.
I’ve never got that close – I mean, I’ve had full requests but no more than that – but I’d have thought you could at least rely on agents to be honest.
We’ve all been blanked on a submission – which is par for the course, even if I don’t particularly like it. But to bring…[Read more] -

I really enjoyed these stories. Each one had a compelling premise, good narrative drive and strong writing. All were serious contenders. In these circumstances picking a winning comes down, in part at least, to personal preferences.
I’ve added a few editorial points in my comments in the hope these are useful if you’re going to be developing the…[Read more]

Great competition, Libby, and thank you for your comments. Much appreciated. Congratulations John. It is a wonderful story and a worthy winner out of a group of fab stories.

I’m astounded by all these badly behaved agents, because bad behaviour it is. It’s just rude, and they must understand how galling it is for an author to get their hopes up needlessly – or maybe they don’t. And as for not replying after requesting a full – well, it’s appalling. @janette your experience in particular has me fuming. How can he gush…[Read more]

Oh Hilary and Janette, I feel for you. Somehow it’s much harder when your hopes have been raised. I guess they’ve got further to fall.
@Janette. I understand that agents receive zillions of submissions everyday and can’t respond personally to each one but I do think, when they’ve requested a full or asked for edits to be made, they could at leas…[Read more]

Gosh @hilary, I am raging on your behalf too! This all sounds so demoralising, and I do admire your fortitude in picking yourself up and starting a new book. I hope you’ll focus on the fact that you had lots of requests for a full ms – even on a weekend!! – and take Raine’s advice and submit again. As you rightly say, many agents have book club…[Read more]

Wow, this is so rich @hilary. So much there, so many hints and glimpses and twinges of pain and longing and sadness. There’s a sort of yearning behind of these lines that breaks my heart a bit. Such powerful fragments.

@hilary I should be in Lincoln early afternoon so definitely happy to have a drink and catch-up before the launch. I know someone else who will be in town early. Cannot wait for it!

Agreed, @Janeshuff and @hilary re the tiny details being evocative. I always struggle when someone is describing some room or building in perfect (perhaps even gorgeous!) detail. I’d rather just know one or two small, precise things that tell the story all on their own. So don’t tell me about every feature in some grand rococco drawing room, but…[Read more]

Anyway, cannot wait to buy my Little White Lies copy.

I’m very happy to be on this journey with all you amazing writers, as well. What a privilege! I understand your reaction perfectly @hilary.
I’ve read the Le Guin chapter (again – luckily I already had that book but haven’t properly done the exercises, so hooray for this course) but I’m still waiting for my Burroway book to arrive. Can I get…[Read more]

Aw @hilary that’s lovely! Sending you lots of hugs and tea!! I think the idea of being given prompts and free writing is such a liberating feeling, especially if other writing is proving a struggle. And being able to do so in a group makes the whole writing thing feel less lonely, I find. I know I have been really struggling with the urge to just…[Read more]

Well done @hilary! I never know the exact ending till about 2/3 of the way through, and it’s always a bit of a relief to figure it out! Hope it helps you move through the last few bits now you’ve got it mapped out.
